How to use

  1. Click the Kruti Dev box and type with the Remington layout: d for क, k for the ा sign, Hkkjr for भारत.
  2. The other box shows your words as Unicode Hindi as you type, with the ि sign and the reph already where Unicode needs them.
  3. Copy the Unicode into WhatsApp, email, Word or a form. It shows in any Hindi font, so the person reading it needs no Kruti Dev.

Common problems & fixes

The box I type in shows English letters
That is expected. Remington keystrokes are English letters until a font or a converter draws them as Hindi. The Unicode box beside it is your Hindi.
ि lands on the wrong letter
In Remington you type ि first: fd gives कि. Typed the other way round, df, it attaches to the next letter instead.
I cannot find half letters
They are mostly on Shift: D is क्, E is म्. Hold Shift with the little finger of the other hand, as on a typewriter.
Typing on a phone is awkward
Remington is a ten-finger layout for a physical keyboard. On a phone, the on-screen Hindi keyboard or your phone's own Hindi keypad is quicker.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Remington Hindi keyboard?
The Hindi typewriter layout, brought to computers by fonts such as Kruti Dev and DevLys. Each Hindi letter sits on an English key - d is क, j is र - and letters without a key of their own are made from two, like Hk for भ.
Is Remington the same as InScript?
No. InScript is the Unicode layout built into Windows and Android, and it puts letters on different keys: on InScript k is क, on Remington it is the ा sign. Remington vs InScript compares them.
Do I need Kruti Dev installed to type here?
No. Your keystrokes are converted to Unicode Hindi in the browser, so the result shows in any font. You need Kruti Dev only if you want the raw keys to look like Hindi inside Word.
Can I print the layout?
Yes. The Kruti Dev keyboard chart is a one-page A4 PDF of this layout, and the finger chart shows which finger presses each key.

How the Remington layout works

Remington is the Hindi typewriter keyboard. Typists learned it on machines, and Kruti Dev 010 and DevLys carried it onto computers unchanged, which is why typing institutes and many exams still teach it. The most-used letters sit under the strongest fingers: the home row types ं े क ि ह ी र ा स य, so a typist resting there reaches a large share of everyday Hindi without moving.

Three habits cover most of the rest. Letters with no key of their own are built from a half form and the ा stroke: H is भ्, so Hk is भ. Shift gives most half letters. And the ि sign is typed before its consonant, because that is where it is drawn.

Typing Hindi here without learning it first

With the chart open you can hunt for keys, and the converter does the hard part: it turns Remington keystrokes into correctly ordered Unicode, putting ि after its consonant and the reph before its syllable. That is why the result can go straight into email or a website, where Kruti Dev text would show as English letters.

Learning it properly
