How to Type Hindi in MS Word

There are three ways to get Hindi into Word, and the right one depends on how much you type. The quickest needs nothing installed: type Hindi in English letters below, then copy it into Word.

Typing:

Type the way you normally would: namaste, bharat, main ghar ja raha hu

Each word is spelled by Google's Hindi input service as you type, which is what gets thela to ठेला rather than थेला. Only letters are transliterated: numbers, punctuation and symbols stay exactly as typed. If Google cannot be reached, the built-in dictionary takes over automatically.

Where your text goes. English spelling does not record whether an a is अ or आ, nor whether a d is द or ड़. Resolving that needs a language model, so in Hinglish mode each word you type is sent to Google's public input-tools service to be spelled. Numbers, punctuation, web addresses and email addresses are never sent. Exact (ITRANS) never touches the network - it is precise by construction, so it runs entirely in your browser. If you would rather nothing left the page, use that mode.

How to use

  1. Type Hindi as it sounds, in English letters, in the box below: namaste becomes नमस्ते.
  2. Copy the Hindi and paste it into your Word document. If the Hindi turns into boxes, pick Mangal or Nirmala UI for it.
  3. Save the file as usual. The Hindi is Unicode, so it opens correctly on any computer or phone with no extra font.

Tip:Paste with Keep Text Only (from the small clipboard icon Word shows after pasting) so the Hindi takes your document's font and size.

Common problems & fixes

The Hindi becomes boxes when I change the font
The font has no Devanagari letters - Arial, Calibri and Times New Roman do not. Choose a Hindi font: Mangal, Nirmala UI, Kokila, Aparajita and Utsaah all come with Windows.
Changing the font does nothing to the Hindi
Word keeps a separate font for Hindi and other "complex scripts". Select the text, press Ctrl+D and set the font under Complex scripts.
Every Hindi word has a red underline
Word is checking Hindi against an English dictionary. Select the text, open Review → Language → Set Proofing Language and choose Hindi.
My office file is in Kruti Dev
Kruti Dev and Unicode cannot share a paragraph. Convert your Hindi with Unicode to Kruti Dev, paste it, and set the font to Kruti Dev 010.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Hindi font for MS Word?
For everyday documents, Nirmala UI (clean on screen) or Mangal (the traditional official choice), and Kokila reads well in print. All are Unicode and come with Windows. Use Kruti Dev 010 only when a form or an office requires it.
How do I switch on the Hindi keyboard in Windows?
Open Settings → Time & language → Language & region, choose Add a language and add Hindi. Switch between English and Hindi with Windows key + Space. The standard Hindi keyboard is InScript, and Windows also offers a phonetic one in the language options.
Can I type Hindi in Word on a Mac?
Yes. In System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources, add Hindi: Devanagari (InScript) or Hindi - Transliteration, then switch from the input menu in the menu bar.
Will this Hindi work in Google Docs and email?
Yes. It is Unicode, the same as Hindi typed on a phone, so it shows anywhere that has a Hindi font - which is every modern phone and computer.

Three ways, from quickest to fastest

1. Type in English letters, paste into Word

The box above turns English spelling into Hindi: bharat becomes भारत. Nothing to install and nothing to learn, which makes it right for a letter, a form or a few paragraphs. For long documents a real keyboard layout is faster.

2. The Windows Hindi keyboard

Windows includes Hindi keyboards. Add Hindi as a language in Settings, then press Windows key + Space to switch while Word is open. InScript is the standard layout. The phonetic keyboard works like typing in English letters. Either way the result is Unicode, as in option 1.

3. Kruti Dev and the Remington layout

If you trained on a typewriter or for a typing exam, you may already know Remington. Install Kruti Dev 010, choose it in Word and type. It is fast for trained typists, but the result is legacy text that shows as English letters wherever the font is missing, so keep a Unicode copy of anything you send out.

Making Word behave with Hindi

  • Set Hindi as the proofing language so Word stops underlining every word. With Hindi proofing tools installed it will spell-check Hindi too.
  • Use the Complex scripts font (Ctrl+D) to set the Hindi font for a whole document or style at once.
  • Give matras room. Signs like ि and ु reach above and below the line. If they touch the next line, use line spacing of 1.15 or more instead of "Exactly".

Moving between Kruti Dev and Unicode

Office files often mix both. Convert rather than retype: Kruti Dev to Unicode for old documents, Unicode to Kruti Dev when a template needs Kruti Dev. Both convert whole .docx files and keep tables and formatting.
