How to Install Kruti Dev 010 on Windows (and Check It Works)

Before you start

You need the font file for Kruti Dev 010, usually named Kruti_Dev_010.ttf, KRDEV010.TTF or K010.TTF. MyKrutiDev does not distribute it, because we cannot confirm its licence terms, so ask your office IT section or your typing institute for it, or get it from a reputable font library. Be wary of "font packs" that come as an .exe - a font is a .ttf or .otf file and never needs a program to install it.

Make sure it is the right one. The file name or its preview window should say Kruti Dev 010 - not 011, 016, 055 or a "Condensed" version. The family shares most keys but not all, and a near miss is behind many "a few letters come out wrong" complaints.

Install it

1. Unzip it first. Right-click the .zip and choose Extract All. Windows lets you open a zip like a folder, but it will not install a font from inside one.
2. Install for all users. Right-click the .ttf and choose Install for all users. On Windows 11 it may be under Show more options. Without administrator rights, choose Install and the font will work for your account only.
3. Or drag it in. Open Settings → Personalisation → Fonts and drop the file on the "Drag and drop to install" area. It does the same thing.
4. Restart the programs that need it. Word, Excel, PageMaker and CorelDRAW read the font list when they start, so close every window of them and open them again.

Check that it works

Open Word, choose Kruti Dev 010 from the font list and type Hkkjr. If you see भारत, the font is installed and working. Now type fganh: you should get हिंदी. Notice that the ि sign is typed before its letter in Kruti Dev - that is how the typewriter did it.

When it does not appear or does not work

• Not in the font list: Word was open during the install. Close all its windows, including any minimised to the taskbar, and reopen. Still missing? Open C:\Windows\Fonts and search for "Kruti". If nothing is there, the install never happened.
• "Not a valid font file": the download is damaged, or it is not a font at all. Get the file again from another source.
• Still English letters: the text is set in a font with another name - often a variant from the typist's computer. Select all, choose Kruti Dev 010 again, and compare.
• A few letters wrong: you have another member of the family. Remove it from the Fonts folder and install 010.

On a Mac

Double-click the .ttf. Font Book opens with a preview. Press Install. If Font Book reports a problem with the file, it is usually a damaged download - the font itself installs normally on current macOS. Restart Word or Pages afterwards. Keynote and Pages treat Kruti Dev like any other font, but the text is still legacy text: a Mac without the font shows English letters, exactly as Windows does.

Removing a wrong or old version

Two fonts with the same name confuse Word, and a wrong member of the family stays in use until it is removed. Open C:\Windows\Fonts, type "Kruti" in the search box, and look at what is there. Right-click anything that is not Kruti Dev 010 and you no longer need, and choose Delete. Then install 010 again and restart Word. If Windows says the font is in use, close all your programs first, or restart the computer and delete it before opening anything.

Sending Kruti Dev files to others

The font is on your computer, not inside the file. Anyone you send a .docx to needs Kruti Dev 010 as well, or they will see English letters. If they only need to read it, send a PDF (File → Save As → PDF), which carries the letter shapes with it. If they need to edit it on a phone, in Google Docs or on a website, convert it to Unicode first with the Kruti Dev to Unicode converter.

Do you need to install it at all?

Only if you have to type or edit in Kruti Dev - for an exam, a court or a department template. To read or reuse Kruti Dev text, a converter is quicker than installing anything, and the Kruti Dev 010 font page has one at the top.
