How to use

  1. Choose Practice test and the length of your exam - 10 min for an SSC CHSL-style test, 15 or 30 min to build stamina.
  2. Type the passage without looking down. Wrong keys turn red. Correct them only if your exam allows backspace.
  3. Read Net WPM and accuracy on the result, and write them in the progress log to compare week by week.

Tip:Exams score speed and accuracy together. A clean 28 WPM usually beats a careless 35, so get accuracy above 95% first.

Common problems & fixes

My speed collapses in a full-length test
That is stamina, not skill: short tests flatter everyone. In the last three weeks, sit at least one full-length test a day. Pause and resume rather than abandoning a run.
I keep mistyping ि
In Kruti Dev the ि sign is typed before its consonant: fd for कि. Repeat lesson 6 until it is automatic - it is the commonest error in exam passages.
The exam keyboard layout was not the one I practised
Remington and InScript are different keyboards. The notification names the layout or the font (Kruti Dev means Remington and Mangal usually means InScript). Practise only that one.
Conjuncts and half letters slow me down
क्ष, त्र, श्र and the half letters have their own keys or key pairs. The matra and conjunct chart lists each with its exact keys.

Frequently asked questions

Which font and layout does the Hindi typing test use?
The notification and the exam-day instructions say. Kruti Dev 010 on the Remington layout and Mangal on InScript are the two you will usually see. If you learned on a typewriter or at a typing institute, you learned Remington.
Is backspace allowed in the exam?
It depends on the exam. Some allow corrections and score what is left. Others disable backspace or count every error. Practise both: correct as you go in some tests, and in others do not correct anything.
How many words per minute do I need?
For most Hindi typing posts the bar is between 20 and 30 WPM at a set accuracy. Aim about 5 WPM above your target so that a nervous day still passes.
Are these real exam passages?
No. The passages are general Hindi prose written for practice, not copies of any exam paper. They use the same letters, matras and conjuncts, so they build the same skill.

Which exams test Hindi typing

Hindi typing is a qualifying skill test in many recruitments: the SSC CHSL typing test for LDC and JSA posts, CPCT in Madhya Pradesh, High Court and district court exams for typists, stenographers and clerks, and state clerical exams in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and elsewhere. The rules change from one notification to the next, so treat the figures below as typical and check yours for the final word.

  • SSC CHSL typing test: 10 minutes on a computer. Hindi candidates need about 30 words per minute (9,000 key depressions an hour).
  • CPCT (Madhya Pradesh): a timed Hindi typing section in which you choose InScript or a Remington layout. Many posts ask for 20 WPM in Hindi, and some ask for more.
  • High Court and district courts: commonly 25-30 WPM in Hindi, often on Kruti Dev with the Remington layout, sometimes with a separate limit on errors.

How your speed is counted

Exams count key depressions: every keystroke counts, and five keystrokes make one word. In Kruti Dev one Hindi letter can take two or three keys - भ is Hk, क्ष is {k - so 30 WPM in Hindi means fewer Hindi words than it sounds. The test on this page counts the same way, and its headline figure is net WPM: correct keystrokes only.
